FAQs
What is the actual size of 47x100mm treated timber?
The finished size is 45mm x 95mm. Timber is named by its nominal sawn size and loses a little during drying and processing, so allow for 45x95mm when spacing studs or choosing joist hangers.
Is 47x100mm the same as 4×2 timber?
Yes. 47x100mm is the metric name for 4×2 (2″ x 4″). UK merchants sell it in metric, but it’s the same section most builders still call four by two.
What’s the difference between C24 and C16 treated timber?
C24 is a higher strength class than C16. It can carry more load or span further at the same size. For structural work, check span tables or confirm with building control.
Do I need to treat the ends after cutting?
Yes. Cutting exposes untreated timber at the centre of the section. Brush end grain preservative onto every cut end before fixing to keep protection all the way round.
