Why Use Untreated Rough Sawn Timber
Rough sawn untreated timber is a practical, cost-effective option for structural and general building work where a smooth finish is not required. Because it hasn't been through any chemical treatment process, it gives you full control over how it is finished or preserved.
- 47 x 50mm sections are commonly used for studwork, noggins, and light framing
- 47 x 75mm and 47 x 100mm are go-to sizes for stud walls, general carcassing, and internal timber framing
- 47 x 125mm to 47 x 225mm sections suit floor joists, ceiling joists, and roof timbers in domestic construction
- 75 x 200mm and 75 x 225mm are used where greater depth is needed, such as in larger span floor and roof structures
- 22 x 100mm boards work well for general boarding, garden projects, and applications where a wider face is needed at a thinner section
All sections are supplied regularised for consistent sizing, making them straightforward to work with on site. If you intend to use the timber outside, applying a suitable preservative treatment will extend its service life.

Untreated Rough Sawn Timber FAQs
What sizes does your untreated rough sawn timber come in?
We stock sections from 47 x 50mm up to 75 x 225mm, with lengths available from 1.8m up to 6m. All are supplied regularised. Check individual product listings for available lengths.
What is the difference between rough sawn and planed timber?
Rough sawn timber is cut to size but not further machined, so the surface is textured and tolerances are nominal. Planed timber has been finished to a smoother face and is typically used where appearance matters.
Can I use untreated rough sawn timber outside?
Yes, but it will need to be treated with a suitable preservative before or after installation to protect it from moisture, rot, and UV exposure. Untreated timber used outdoors without protection will deteriorate over time.
Is your rough sawn timber FSC® certified?
Yes. Our untreated rough sawn timber is FSC® certified and sourced from responsibly managed forests, predominantly in the Baltics.
Do you deliver rough sawn timber to my area?
We deliver within 65 miles of our Scunthorpe branch using our own in-house delivery fleet. Orders over £500 plus VAT qualify for free delivery. You can also collect from our branch, with most orders ready in under an hour.
