Why Use Treated Rough Sawn Timber
Treated rough sawn timber is a practical choice for outdoor projects where strength and weather resistance matter more than a finished appearance. The pressure treatment protects the timber, and the rough surface texture provides better grip for fixings and coatings.
- 22 x 100 mm and 22 x 150 mm boards are commonly used for fencing rails, garden edging, raised beds and lightweight outdoor structures
- 25 x 38 mm battens suit roof battens, counterbattens, trellis frames and general fixing work
- 47 x 50 mm and 47 x 75 mm timber work well for fence posts, gate frames, pergola uprights and shed framing
- 47 x 100 mm to 47 x 225 mm joists are used for decking subframes, floor joists, wall plates and structural garden building work
- 75 x 150 mm sections provide heavy-duty support for larger outdoor structures, retaining walls and ground-level applications
Most timber is kiln-dried before treatment to reduce moisture content, making it lighter and more stable to work with on site.

Treated Rough Sawn Timber FAQs
- What is rough sawn treated timber used for?
Rough sawn treated timber is used for outdoor construction where rot resistance is needed. Common applications include fencing, decking subframes, garden structures, pergolas, sheds, gates and landscaping projects. - How long does pressure-treated rough sawn timber last outdoors?
Pressure-treated timber typically lasts 15-20 years or more in outdoor conditions when used correctly. Lifespan depends on exposure to ground contact, moisture levels and whether cut ends are sealed after cutting. - Can I paint or stain treated rough sawn timber?
Yes. Allow the timber to weather for a few months after installation so preservatives can stabilize, then apply exterior wood stain or paint. The rough surface holds coatings well. - What's the difference between rough sawn and planed timber?
Rough sawn timber is cut directly from the log with no planing, leaving a textured surface. Planed timber is machined smooth. Rough sawn is typically used where appearance isn't critical and strength matters. - Do you deliver rough sawn timber outside Scunthorpe?
We deliver within a 45-mile radius of our branch in Scunthorpe. Orders over £500 plus VAT qualify for free delivery.
