Why Use MDF Sheets

MDF is an engineered board made from wood fibres bonded under heat and pressure. It machines cleanly, takes paint well, and provides a flat, knot-free surface that solid timber cannot always match.

  • Standard MDF panels are used for shelving, skirting, architraves and internal joinery
  • Moisture resistant MDF suits kitchens, bathrooms and utility rooms where humidity is higher
  • Veneered MDF provides the look of real wood for cabinet doors, furniture fronts and display units
  • MDF sheets 18mm thick work well for worktops, desk tops and structural shelving
  • 3mm MDF sheets are commonly used for drawer bottoms, cabinet backs and template work

Most boards come in 2440 x 1220 mm and cut cleanly with standard woodworking tools.

MDF Sheets FAQs

  1. What thicknesses of MDF do you stock? We carry MDF in 3 mm, 5 mm, 7 mm, 9 mm, 12 mm, 13 mm, 18 mm and 19 mm. Standard sheet size is 2440 x 1220 mm across all thicknesses.
  2. What is moisture resistant MDF used for? Moisture resistant MDF is designed for areas with higher humidity, such as kitchens, bathrooms and utility rooms. It handles damp conditions better than standard MDF but is not suitable for direct water contact.
  3. Can MDF be painted? Yes. MDF takes paint well due to its smooth, even surface. Sand lightly and apply a primer before painting for best results. Seal cut edges to prevent moisture absorption.
  4. What is the difference between MDF and veneered MDF? Standard MDF has a plain surface designed for painting or laminating. Veneered MDF has a real wood face, such as oak or walnut, giving a timber appearance without the cost of solid wood.
  5. Do you deliver MDF sheets outside Scunthorpe? We deliver within a 45-mile radius of our Scunthorpe branch. Orders over £500 plus VAT qualify for free delivery.
