Why Use Planed Timber
Planed timber is machined from rough sawn stock to a smooth, square finish, so it is ready to use for visible and finished work without the extra preparation sawn timber needs.
- Narrow sections (25 x 50mm, 25 x 75mm) suit battening, framing and boxing in pipework
- Wider boards (25 x 150mm to 25 x 225mm) work for shelving, furniture and general joinery
- Thicker sections (38 x 100mm, 50 x 100mm) suit heavier framing and structural-looking interior work
- Square posts (100 x 100mm) are used for newel-style uprights and heavier framing
- Redwood takes paint and stain cleanly, making it a common choice for finished interior joinery
Planed timber is sold by nominal size, so the finished size is slightly smaller than stated once machined. Check the finished dimensions on each product page when matching to existing trim.

Planed Timber FAQs
What is the difference between PSE and PAR timber?
None in practice. PSE (Planed Square Edge) and PAR (Planed All Round) both describe timber planed smooth on all four faces with square edges. The terms are used interchangeably across the trade.
What sizes does your planed timber come in?
We stock FSC® redwood planed sections from 25 x 50mm up to 100 x 100mm, including popular sizes like 25 x 100mm, 38 x 100mm and 50 x 100mm, in a range of lengths.
Why is the timber slightly smaller than the size listed?
Planed timber is sold by nominal size, the dimension before machining. Planing removes material to create the smooth finish, so the finished size is a little smaller. Always work to the finished size when matching existing joinery.
Can I use planed timber for structural work?
Planed timber is intended for joinery and finished interior work, not load-bearing use. For joists, rafters and studwork you need graded structural timber. Ask our team if you are unsure which to use.
Do you deliver planed timber outside of Scunthorpe?
We deliver within a 65-mile radius of our Scunthorpe branch. Orders over £500 plus VAT qualify for free delivery.
